Union
Hall
Friday
Morning February 23,1935 the workers of Tucapau were on Strike.
The
strongest of the was Local 2070 and it was the struggles of the
workers and Managers over mastery of the Tucapau Mill and
village that ultimately became the Taw's last butwalk against
extinction in South Carolina.
The
strike meant no one had any income. Someone hauled in truckloads
of cabbage and distributed them the union workers. The non-union
people hauled in loads of apples and gave them to non-strikers.
From then on the Union people were know as CABBAGE HEADS and the
non-union people were called the RED APPLES.
On July
15,1935 Local 2070 sponsored an impromptu parade through the
village that afternoon and on the following day July 16,1935
Tucapau Mills reopened for business.
Spring
1936--- The Tucapau Plant was sold to Walter Montgomery
President of Spartan Mills.
During
June and July 1936 while the plant continued to operate,
Montgomery began to remodel the mills and village. That is when
the village was renamed to Startex and the mill was known as
Startex MILLS.
This is the Union Hall that was located over on the 500 area.
The building is still standing today.
