The Old Dam

If you have any information you would like to share about "The Old Dam" please send it to us to include on this page.

Story told to Carolyn Downing by Buddy Cannon long time resident of Startex.  The dam was build by Mr. George Hamilton grandfather to Mr. Cannon in the 1903. Mr. Hamilton lived in the first house built in Tucapau down next to the river. They made the bricks themselves out of mud and let them dry in the sun. We had a flood but the dam stayed even through the dam was not compelled. Mr. Cannon still has some of those bricks.  Mr. Hamilton gave Tucapau the land to build a Presbyterian Church. They took the land but never build the Church. No one can remember where the land was located.

Here are some pictures of the dam being torn down (click picture to enlarge).
