Memories of Startex

by

Emily Patton Scott

My memories of  Startex go back many years, and span many years.  I was a student at Startex for six years.  I have 3 children who were or are students at Startex, and the school, teachers and faculty have been very special during that time.

A few things I remember about the school when I was there (1960 -66) are things about the building itself.  The cafeteria/gym building was separate from the classroom section.  Before school in the morning, the students played outside until the bell rang to go inside.  There were swing sets, slides a merry-go-round, hand swings and a tether ball on the playground.  There were no paved areas.  There was a soft drink machine outside the gym that students could buy a Tom's chocolate drink if they had a dime
I remember students putting up and taking down the flags in front of the building every day, like they still do today.

We had plays put on by different classrooms at various times during the year.  This happened in the gym on the stage that has just recently been opened back for use.  (I really do not remember the acoustics being so bad or the heat or cold being a problem then.)
What is now the library and kindergarten area was a large room that could be darkened easily.  We would gather the entire school together and see movies.  Most of the time they were educational, but interesting movies, and sometimes, they were purely for entertainment.  Those we liked the best.

I remember all of my teachers.

In first grade I have Mrs. Grawley.  We all her and our Dick and Jane books, but she left after the year I had her.

My second grade teacher was Mrs. Anderson.  She was very special.  She lived here on Main Street in Startex until the last few months.  I remember getting a card from her congratulating me on my High School Graduation.

Mrs. Ross was my third grade  teacher.  I remember multiplication, and learning about the importance of brushing my teeth every day from her.

Mrs. Elders was my fourth grade teacher.  I remember that we all loved her very much.  My sister was three years behind me in school.  The year she would have had Mrs. Elders, Mrs. Elders passed away at the beginning of the school year.  That was so very sad.

Mrs. Stapleton was my fifth grade teacher. She had a plan where some students would work separately from the class.  That was interesting.  When my daughter started to Startex, she was still teaching fifth grade.

Mrs. Sloan was the sixth grade teacher.  I remember always thinking she was stern and tough until I got to sixth grade.  She was a very gentle and caring teacher.

When we decided to choose where to buy a home and raise a family, I was very glad my children would be able to got to Startex.  I have had at least one child enrolled at Startex every year since 1981, and they have been very good years. The school, the teachers, the faculty and the memories will be special forever.
