John Bomar Cleveland

Cleveland was a Wofford College graduate who first worked as an attorney before becoming a successful businessman and private banker.  He was a director of the National Bank of Spartanburg, Fidelity Loan & Trust, as well as the Arkwright, Whitney, Tucapau, Saxon, Enoree and Spartan Mill cotton mills.

A prominent and influential business man of Spartanburg.  Is a native of that city.  Was born November 9, 1848.  He is a graduate of Wofford College.  After finishing school he studied law in the office of Evins & Bomar, a leading firm of Spartanburg.  In 1871, he was admitted to the bar, forming a partnership for the practice of law with Major D. R. Duncan, and for ten years, this firm did a very successful business.  In 1880, Mr. Cleveland dissolved his connection with this firm, and turned his attention to other business.  For the next ten years, he had done a private banking and brokerage business, in which he met with great success.  He was a delegate to the National Convention in Chicago in 1884, and nominated Grover Cleveland for president.  Director in the National Bank of Spartanburg, Fidelity Loan & Trust Company, Arkwright, Whitney, Tucapau, Saxon, Enoree and Spartan Mill cotton factories.  Vice-president of the National Bank of Spartanburg.  President of the Lime Stone Springs Lime Company, Home Water Supply Company, Whitney Manufacturing Company, and the Charleston and Western Carolina Railroad.  A trustee of Wofford College and also of Converse College.  For several years one of the trustees of the city schools, and a prime mover in establishing the graded school system in his native city.  He was married in 1871, to Miss Georgia A. Cleveland.  His reputation among business men is very high, and socially, he enjoyed the highest esteem and respect of his fellow citizens.
